Yoennis Cespedes

If you don't know the name already, get prepared to.  Yoennis Cespedes is being touted as the greatest player to come out of Cuba in a generation, already garnering interest from numerous teams, and likely to gain a hefty contract, Cespedes will become a name well known to the baseball world this offseason.  What are his plans once he hits the free agent market?  Who will sign him and what kind of contract will he receive?
Yoennis Cespedes is a cener fielder from the Cuban National team.  A human highlight reel Cespedes boasts amazing athletic ability, combined with a high baseball acumen.  He is known for his plus speed, exceptional defense, and his stellar bat, Cespedes will likely generate a contract in the double digit millions.  Many are wondering if he is really worth that type of deal.  Cespedes' bat has been the biggest drawing point of interest.  In the previous season in Cuba Cespedes set the home run record at 33 over a 90 game season.  His abilities were on display to the world during the 2009 World Baseball Classic where he started in Center Field.  In his 6 games during The Classic Cespedes hit 2 home runs, 3 triples, and a double.  And he did this with a .458 batting average.  These kinds of numbers are nothing new to the Cuban born center fielder.  The kinds of stats produced by Cesepedes make one understand the contract offers he will likely receive.  Is he worth it for your team?  In my opinion, more than likely yes.  At 26 years old Cespedes is entering his prime as an athlete, already well versed as an outfielder the learning curve will be very limited.  Wherever Cespedes lands, he will likely end up in a big league camp to open spring training with a chance to earn a spot as an everyday center fielder.
For the local aspect, the Nationals have begun scouting Cespedes.  In need of a center fielder, and a leadoff type hitter, and with money to spend Cespedes will likely receive offers from Washington.  It's not known whether Cespedes has any particular interest in any team.  The Nationals should and will consider Cespedes.  I would expect a contract offer coming from them in the coming weeks, the issue being that theirs is not the only one that will appear on his agents desk.  Reports are that the Yankees, Red Sox, Phillies, Pirates, and the Florida Marlins have all expressed interest in the Cuban defector.  There will be a bidding war for Cespedes' services.  The Nationals have not shied away from bidding wars in the past (Aroldis Chapman, Mark Texiera), and, being exactly what the Nationals are targeting to acquire this offseason, will likely be in this war until the end.  I am of the opinion that the Nationals need to win this one.  With their contention window opening next season, Cespedes will fill the void in center field, and will be a productive member of the line up.  So, Nationals fans brace yourself, it may get a little wild, but if the front office is of like mind with me, they will be sending an offer of upward of 30 million to the relatively unknown player.
